Candiderm is a topical medication used to treat various dermatological conditions. This article provides detailed information about the specific uses of Candiderm in treating skin diseases.

1. What is Candiderm?

Candiderm is a topical cream with active ingredients Beclomethasone dipropionate 0.05%, Clotrimazole 1%, and Gentamicin 0.1%. It is packaged in a 15g tube and manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, Ltd., India.

Information about the main ingredients:

  • Clotrimazole
    • Pharmacodynamics: Clotrimazole is an antifungal agent from the imidazole group, similar to miconazole.
    • Pharmacokinetics: When applied to the skin, it works effectively on the surface and penetrates deeper layers to treat fungal infections. Topical application results in negligible absorption into the bloodstream.
    • When administered orally or vaginally, Clotrimazole undergoes rapid liver metabolism before systemic effects occur. About 50% of Clotrimazole and its metabolites in plasma bind to albumin. Peak drug and metabolite levels occur 2–6 hours after oral dosing.
    • Clotrimazole is primarily excreted via bile and urine, mostly in metabolized forms, with only 1% as active drug.
  • Beclomethasone dipropionate
    • Beclomethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid with potent anti-inflammatory effects and fewer side effects compared to oral glucocorticoids.
  • Gentamicin
    • Gentamicin is a powerful antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from producing essential proteins. It is effective against many types of bacteria, including those that cause skin infections. Gentamicin is also effective against some Mycoplasma and Actinomyces species.

2. What are the uses of Candiderm?

Candiderm is indicated for the treatment of skin infections, including:

  • Eczema (itchy, inflamed, cracked, and rough skin patches)
  • Dermatitis (skin rashes)
  • Impetigo (red sores on the face)
  • Psoriasis (rapid cell turnover causing red, scaly patches)
  • Diaper rash
  • Skin infections
  • Groin dermatitis
  • Chronic dermatitis
  • Conditions such as cellulitis, eczema with lichenification, pompholyx, contact dermatitis, neurodermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, pustules, angular cheilitis, and ulcers
  • Athlete’s foot, jock itch, body ringworm, and secondary bacterial infections with eczema

3. Dosage and administration

  • Application: Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer of cream 2–3 times daily.
  • Dosage: The specific dosage depends on the patient’s condition and disease progression. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

4. Side effects of using Candiderm

If any side effects occur during the use of Candiderm, patients should immediately consult their doctor or pharmacist for appropriate management.

Possible side effects include:

  • Dry or burning skin;
  • Folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles);
  • Unusual hair growth;
  • Acne-like rashes;
  • Thinning or wrinkling of the skin when used with a bandage.

5. Contraindications

Candiderm should not be used in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity or allergy to any component of the cream
  • Conditions such as cutaneous tuberculosis, chickenpox, herpes, measles, vaccinia, syphilis, or skin ulcers

6. Drug interactions

Drug interactions can alter the effectiveness of Candiderm or increase the risk of side effects. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications and supplements they are using to avoid adverse interactions. Do not self-adjust the dose without professional guidance.

7. Precautions

  • Read the package insert carefully and consult a healthcare provider before use.
  • Do not apply Candiderm to large areas or cover it with bandages, as this can cause too much medicine to enter your body.
  • Do not apply Candiderm to open wounds or damaged skin.
  • Pregnant women should avoid using high doses or prolonged applications.
  • Storage: Store the cream in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

To sum up, candiderm is a topical cream with active ingredients Beclomethasone dipropionate, Clotrimazole, and Gentamicin, used for treating various skin conditions. To ensure effectiveness and safety, follow the doctor’s instructions carefully during its use.
